More info

"It is the gold standard for corporate email communication, and thus has built-in Blackberry support for secured corporate email, iPhone/iPad support, and is accessible from many other platforms and environments. It has pretty solid security and has been in every corporate environment I've encountered, and will remain that way until Google Apps or some upstart has better features/stability."

About Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 Standard

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 is an evolutionary upgrade from Exchange Server 2013.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 offers you Data Loss Prevention, managed availability, automatic recovery from storage failures, improved search, simplified document sharing and an improved web-based Exchange admin centre.

Exchange 2016 supports the following versions of Outlook:

  • Outlook 2016

  • Outlook 2013

  • Outlook 2010 with KB2965295

  • Outlook for Mac for Office 365

  • Outlook for Mac 2011

Exchange 2016 Standard or Enterprise?

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 is available in two server editions: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. Enterprise Edition can scale to 100 mounted databases per server. Standard Edition is limited to 5 mounted databases per server.

A mounted database is a database that is in use. A mounted database can be an active mailbox database that is mounted for use by clients, or a passive mailbox database that is mounted in recovery for log replication and replay. While you can create more databases than the limits described above, you can only mount the maximum number specified above. The recovery database does not count towards this limit.

Standard: designed for the mailbox needs of small to midsize organisations. Also appropriate for non-mailbox roles in a larger Exchange deployment. This edition supports 1 to 5 mounted mailbox databases.

Each database has a storage capacity of 1024 GB (1 TB), giving you a maximum of 5120 GB (5 TB). How many mailboxes and the storage capacity of each mailbox you put in each database is up to you. If you need more, the Enterprise edtion will give you more.

Enterprise: designed for larger organisations that may require a greater number of mailbox databases. This edition supports 1 to 100 mounted mailbox databases.

Exchange 2016 Standard and Enterprise CALs

Both Standard and Enterprise editions require CALs. A CAL is required for each user or device that accesses the server software.

There are two types of CALs for Exchange 2016, both of which work with either edition.

You can confirm that here: Exchange Server 2016 licensing.

Standard CAL: designed to help users be more productive from virtually any platform, browser, or mobile device, with new features in Exchange Server 2016 that help manage communications overload and lower helpdesk costs.

To enable Standard CAL features for a user, the user must be licensed with the Standard CAL.

Enterprise CAL: designed to allow organisations to reduce the cost and complexity of meeting compliance requirements with new integrated archiving functionality and information protection capabilities, while also helping you cut costs by replacing legacy voice mail systems with Unified Messaging.

The Enterprise CAL is sold as an add-on to the Standard CAL—to enable Enterprise CAL features, the user must be licensed with one Standard CAL plus one Enterprise CAL.

The Exchange Enterprise CAL is available in two variants: with and without services. The following table provides a detailed feature breakdown for each CAL.
