Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL

Overview

A Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL is a single license that provides you with the rights equivalent to multiple licenses.

Like other CALs, a Microsoft Core CAL Suite can be licensed on either a per-user or per-device basis. This Device CAL is on the per-device basis.

Getting a Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL simplifies licensing and tracking by reducing the number of licenses necessary to access Microsoft servers.

Getting a Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL may also provide pricing that is cheaper than licensing the equivalent components individually, approximately 30 percent cheaper.

This Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL is equivalent to the following licenses:

• Windows Server Device CAL
• SharePoint Server Standard Device CAL
• Exchange Server Standard Device CAL (provides access to both the Exchange Server Standard Edition and the Exchange Server Enterprise Edition)
• System Center Configuration Manager Client Management License
• System Center Endpoint Protection
• Skype for Business Server Standard Device CAL

However, since a suite is a single license—the sum of individual CALs—this Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL cannot be divided among more than one device.

The required server software licenses are not included in this Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL and must be purchased separately.

This Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL comes with Microsoft Software Assurance. See the next section to find out some more about this.

How Microsoft Software Assurance affects things

With this Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL you are getting both perpetual license and Microsoft Software Assurance.

A perpetual license does not expire.

Software Assurance will expire after two years if it is not renewed.

While the Software Assurance coverage is active, you have the right to use the most recent version of every product in the Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL.

If the Software Assurance coverage lapses, because you are vested with perpetual rights, you can continue to use the Microsoft Core CAL Suite Device CAL.

If the Software Assurance coverage lapses, the versions you can use are determined by the latest version of the products in effect prior to the lapse in coverage.

For example, if your Software Assurance coverage for the Core CAL Suite Device CAL expired on 1 February 2017, you will have perpetual rights equivalent to the most recent version of the Core CAL Suite Device CAL’s components as of that date. But you will not have rights to versions of components released after 1 February 2017 or to any products added to the Core CAL Suite Device CAL after that date.

Please note that System Center Endpoint Protection will expire if Software Assurance is allowed to lapse.
