About Microsoft Exchange Server Standard Device CALs and User CALs

With Exchange Server there are two types of Exchange CALs: Device CALs and User CALs. Choosing the right one can mean buying fewer CALs, thereby saving you money.

A Device CAL is assigned to a device (a computer such as a desktop). A User CAL is assigned to a user (a person such as a staff member).

If you have more users than devices, it is cheaper to choose Device CALs. For example, you have twenty staff sharing five computers.

But if you have more devices than users, it is cheaper to choose Users CALs. For example, you have twenty computers available for five staff.

Microsoft describe the difference as: A Device CAL permits one device (used by any user) to access or use the server software. A User CAL permits one user (using any device) to access or use the server software.

About Exchange Standard and Enterprise CALs

With Microsoft Exchange 2013 and Microsoft Exchange 2016, we get the Enterprise CAL as an add-on to the Standard CAL.

These add-on CALs, work with both the Standard and Enterprise editions. In other words you get Exchange Standard with Standard CALs by default, and you get Exchange Enterprise with Standard CALs by default. If you wish, you can then enhance the capability of the Standard CALs by adding the Enterprise CALs to the mix.

You can confirm that here: Exchange Server 2013 licensing.

Standard CAL: designed to help users be more productive from virtually any platform, browser, or mobile device, with new features in Exchange Server that help manage communications overload and lower helpdesk costs.

To enable Standard CAL features for a user, the user must be licensed with the Standard CAL.

Enterprise CAL: designed to allow organisations to reduce the cost and complexity of meeting compliance requirements with new integrated archiving functionality and information protection capabilities, while also helping you cut costs by replacing legacy voice mail systems with Unified Messaging.

The Enterprise CAL is sold as an add-on to the Standard CAL — to enable Enterprise CAL features, the user must be licensed with one Standard CAL plus one Enterprise CAL.

The Exchange Enterprise CAL is available in two variants: with and without services.

The following table provides a detailed feature breakdown for each CAL.
