About Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard

Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 is an evolutionary upgrade to Exchange Server 2016.

Twenty-two years after its original release, Exchange 2019 will be in production for the next ten years or more. Today’s software is very different to Exchange 4.0, but the Information Store, the Extensible Storage Engine database, and some other components persist. Not many software applications can boast the same longevity, flexibility, and adaptability.

Security Exchange Server 2019 requires Windows Server 2019. In fact, Microsoft recommend installing Exchange Server 2019 onto Windows Server 2019 Server Core, as this provides the most secure platform for Exchange.
Exchange Server 2019 has been built to only use TLS 1.2 out of the box, and to remove legacy ciphers and hashing algorithms. To understand how this affects coexistence with earlier versions, please read this:

Performance Exchange Server 2019 can use up to 48 processor cores and 256GB of RAM.

Exchange Server 2019 uses Bing technology to make searches faster and provide better results.

Database failovers are much faster, and administration is easier.

Dual storage read/write capabilities have been added to Exchange Server 2019 using Solid State Drive (SSD) technology to provide a very fast cache of key data that will improve things for end users.

The way database caching works has been changed to allocate more memory to active database copies, again improving things for end users.

The improvements made to Exchange Server 2019 will enable you to scale to a larger number of users per server than ever before, use much larger disks, and see the latency of many client operations being cut in half.

End user experience Large enterprises are heavy calendar users. Exchange Server 2019 brings a few key features, such as restricting the forwarding of meeting requests and better control over Out of Office (OOF) settings. Administrators get some new calendaring features too, including the ability to manage events on user’s calendars and assign delegate permissions more easily.

There is also added support for routing mail to and from EAI/IDN (Email Address Internationalization/ Internationalized Domain Name) recipients.

Unified Messaging The Unified Messaging role will not be available in Exchange Server 2019. If you are currently connecting either a 3rd party PBX or Skype for Business Server to Exchange Server, you won’t be able to do so with Exchange Server 2019 mailboxes. So if  you are considering an upgrade to Exchange Server 2019 you should consider migrating to Skype for Business Server 2019 and using Cloud Voicemail, or migrating to Office 365 with Cloud Voicemail.

Exchange 2019 Standard or Enterprise?

Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 is available in two server editions: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. Enterprise Edition can scale to 100 mounted databases per server. Standard Edition is limited to 5 mounted databases per server.

A mounted database is a database that is in use. A mounted database can be an active mailbox database that is mounted for use by clients, or a passive mailbox database that is mounted in recovery for log replication and replay. While you can create more databases than the limits described above, you can only mount the maximum number specified above. The recovery database does not count towards this limit.

Standard: designed for the mailbox needs of small to midsize organisations. Also appropriate for non-mailbox roles in a larger Exchange deployment. This edition supports 1 to 5 mounted mailbox databases.

Each database has a storage capacity of 1024 GB (1 TB), giving you a maximum of 5120 GB (5 TB). How many mailboxes and the storage capacity of each mailbox you put in each database is up to you. If you need more, the Enterprise edtion will give you more.

Enterprise: designed for larger organisations that may require a greater number of mailbox databases. This edition supports 1 to 100 mounted mailbox databases.

Exchange 2019 Standard and Enterprise CALs

Both Standard and Enterprise editions require CALs. A CAL is required for each user or device that accesses the server software.

There are two types of CALs for Exchange 2019, both of which work with either edition.

You can confirm that here: Exchange Server 2019 licensing.

Standard CAL: designed to help users be more productive from virtually any platform, browser, or mobile device, with new features in Exchange Server 2019 that help manage communications overload and lower helpdesk costs.

To enable Standard CAL features for a user, the user must be licensed with the Standard CAL.

Enterprise CAL: designed to allow organisations to reduce the cost and complexity of meeting compliance requirements with new integrated archiving functionality and information protection capabilities, while also helping you cut costs by replacing legacy voice mail systems with Unified Messaging.

The Enterprise CAL is sold as an add-on to the Standard CAL—to enable Enterprise CAL features, the user must be licensed with one Standard CAL plus one Enterprise CAL.

The Exchange Enterprise CAL is available in two variants: with and without services. The following table provides a detailed feature breakdown for each CAL.
