What is an interactive whiteboard?

An interactive whiteboard is really three pieces of equipment linked together:

A computer (Mac or PC)

A digital projector

A touch-sensitive screen (in other words, the interactive whiteboard)

So you could say the interactive whiteboard acts as a very large touch-screen monitor. With a pen, or sometimes a finger, you can write on the board or, through the board, control your computer's programs. This means that an interactive whiteboards brings the power of your computer, its software and the internet into the classroom or conference environment effectively and easily.

How do you use one?

An interactive whiteboard can be used in the same way as a traditional whiteboard. However, only the Hitach Cambridge whiteboard (the one on this website) is designed to be written on with ordinary whitebaord markers. Most interactive whiteboards come with special pens (that display what is called virtual ink) for writing on the whiteboard.

It is when you combine the the interactive whiteboard with a projector and computer that the whiteboard becomes a large touch screen monitor. And it is at this stage that you begin to see the benefits of having one. Using interactive whiteboards removes the need to have large groups huddled around a single computer screen.

By touching and interacting with the whiteboard you are controlling the attached computer as if you were sitting in front of the monitor at your computer.

Using the power of a computer

Any program can be operated on your whiteboard from your computer. For example tables in the Excel spreadsheet can be displayed in a maths lessons or during a conference on last quarter's sales.

Or connect a microscope to your computer and during a science lessons display on your whiteboard closeups of insects and microbes. Or during a conference display on the whiteboard the new products or designs using the CAD program on the computer. In either scenario, you can annotate over the pictures to save or print or to aid the presentation.

The technology is extremely flexible. Besides displaying computer software on the whiteboard, you can display (with the appropriate connections) web pages and videos (from DVD, VHS or CD-ROM). This means you could replace an ordinary whiteboard, overhead projector, video recorder and television with an interactive whiteboard installation.

You can see from this that interactive whiteboards are useful in meetings, dynamic presentations, training, education, classrooms, trade shows and conferences.

Easy to learn

If you are familiar with computers, learning how to use an interactive whiteboard is straightforward. For instance, instead of opening a computer program by double clicking on its icon with a mouse, you tap twice on the icon displayed on the interactive whiteboard and that will open the program on the computer. This is because the interactive whiteboard operates like a touch-screen display.

Teachers and pupils, or presenter and audience, can interact with the computer through the whiteboard.
