Overview of Project 2010

Microsoft Project 2010 Professional is the same as Microsoft Project 2010 Standard except for one difference: the Professional edition can work with Microsoft Project Server, but the Standard edition cannot.

If you plan to use Microsoft Project software as a standalone (in other words, not with Project Server), you should get Project 2010 Standard and save yourself some money.

The first change you will notice is that the Ribbon interface, in line with the Office 2010 ribbon.

This manual scheduling allows novices to simply type their desired task dates to produce a Gantt chart while experienced users can create their project sheets in automatic mode and thus utilise the powerful Project scheduling engine. Manually scheduled tasks can be easily converted to automatically scheduled tasks, and so you get the best of both worlds.

Microsoft Project 2010 contains a new view called the Timeline which sits above the Gantt chart. It is useful for seeing the length and start/end dates of the project and for quickly viewing different parts of the Gantt chart. You can also add your choice of tasks and milestones to it, to produce a personalised project summary.

This timeline can be inserted into emails, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and practically any document capable of displaying graphics, making it an excellent addition to Project.

The team planner view will make it easier if you use manual scheduling mode to rearrange tasks according to overallocation (if you use automatic scheduling you still have available the same levelling tools).

You can compare two projects with each other - ideal for when multiple project sheets get out of hand or you wish to compare a previous project with the current project.

If you want to inactivate any task the new Inactivate Task button allows you to keep all the information without it impacting the scheduling of your project sheet. The task bar changes to a clear task bar. The task can be made active again with a single click.

Baselines 1 to 10 (which in the past were sometimes inconvenient to display) are now available on a simple drop-down menu to make switching views between baselines very easy.

Project 2010 is compatible with previous versions of Microsoft Project, allowing Project 2010 users to create files which can be opened in version 2007 and 2003 then opened again in version 2010 though it goes without saying that the new Project 2010 features are not available when using versions 2007 and 2003 of Microsoft Project.
