Compared with Office for the Mac 2008 and its predecessors, you should find Office 2011 stylish, better-designed, faster and more powerful. It's more Mac-like than ever, more closely integrated with OS X. It is also more compatible with Microsoft Office for Windows.

If you're a casual, light-duty office-suite user or a student, iWork remains a good choice. But if you have heavy-duty work to get done or you need to use Outlook, you will want Office for the Mac 2011 Standard.

Probably the first thing you will notice is the new ribbon interface, similar to the one on the Windows version albeit somewhat adapted to the graphics-oriented world of the Mac.

You should find that Word for the Mac has been given extra oomph and flexibility.

Although no edition of Mac Office has Publisher (Microsoft have yet to write a Publisher for the Mac operating system), Word for the Mac in it's "publishing" mode has a feature set that is similar to the one found in Publisher for Windows.

Excel 2011 gets the clever graphic features in Excel 2010 for Windows such as "sparklines" (single-cell charts for graphic display of data in a row or column) and Excel's flexible and eye-catching conditional formatting features. The best thing about Excel 2011, however, is that it starts and recalculates at top speed.

With PowerPoint you can manage groups of slide as a single unit, record and write VBA macros (more on this below), use built-in picture-editing tools, embed movies into slides, and broadcast your presentations over the Web by using a Microsoft-provided Web server.

As you probably know, Outlook replaces Entourage in this 2011 version of Office. You should find the new Outlook for the Mac to be both faster and far more powerful. Very similar and almost as feature-rich as Outlook for Windows, it yet has special features that are fitting for the Mac environment.

One thing I should point out. Outlook for the Mac can get mail from Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 but not from earlier versions of Exchange. If this is a problem for you, one solution is to use Entourage as Entourage and Outlook can coexist on the same system.

One other useful addition is the collaboration feature that lets many users simultaneously edit a document when the document is stored on Microsoft's free SkyDrive cloud-based storage or on a SharePoint server.

Some reviewers have commented on the return of the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) automation language that disappeared from Mac Office when "classic" Mac went OS X. The earlier VBAs were somewhat limited. This one isn't. Not only can you record and edit macros in OS X, but you should also find most of the macros recorded or written for use in the Windows version will also work.
