MailScan for SMTP Servers is for customers using Linux, Unix, Novell or other non-Windows platforms for their email server.

MailScan for SMTP Servers works on a Windows machine and acts as a security gateway between your mail server and the Internet. It also has an inbuilt multi-threaded SMTP Server and the Enterprise Edition has a POP3 downloader.

It has the world's first email, content security and antivirus feature that analyses emails in real time, before they are delivered to the clients or the servers on your network. This allows you to scan internal emails (local user to local user) and external emails (local user to Internet, Internet to local user).

Besides providing antivirus and content scanning, MailScan also has a Generic Attachment Analyzer, automatic compression and decompression feature, a comprehensive Notification Engine as well as many other features.

The Checkmark certification comes from West Coast Labs. They have a virus library with many thousands of different viruses and variants, collected through a bespoke harvesting process.

For a product to be certified to Anti-Virus Checkmark, Level One the product must be able to detect all those viruses which are "In the Wild". This gives a clear and independent indication to end users of those anti-virus products that they can be relied on to perforn to Level One functionality.

Features

Realtime Blackhole List (RBL): The Mail Abuse Prevention System (MAPS) provides a list of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses that are known spammers or allow spamming. This list is called a black hole list. When your SMTP server receives an email from a domain that is not on its allow domain list, it can be checked with the MAPS Server which verifies it.

Dial-Up Users (DUL): Spammers sometimes use stealth email tactics when their initial spam attempts are blocked. They use a dial-up-service (DUL) provider to connect their spam email service, to the SMTP server. This is trespassing on your mail server and the MAPS DUL project helps in identifying and stopping such spam. The project has a list of DUL users who are known spammers. To verify if the request for connection to your SMTP Server is genuine, you can send a query to dialups.mail-abuse.org. The request is verified and returned.

Reverse DNS: MailScan for SMTP Servers will do reverse DNS for each connecting IP to verify their IP when other users try to connect to your server.

User level routing/forwarding: This provides routing and forwarding of mails on a user level.

Mailparking and Mail delay: This feature provides delay for outbound emails It also allows you to select the size of emails that should be parked or delayed and to set the time duration.

Mailsize Restriction: This provides mailsize restriction on a gateway level.

Clustering: This feature is useful to ISPs or servers that receive a large number of emails that need to be scanned. The primary server receives emails. As scanning takes time, you can designate other machines in your network, distribute emails to them for scanning. This is called load balancing and the machines form a cluster. The cluster machines need not be connected to the Internet but they must have MailScan for SMTP Servers installed.

Relay Control using IP-blocks (to ensure that unauthorized IP addresses are blocked from sending emails through the mail server).

Relay Control using sender-domain checks: emails sent through MailScan for SMTP Servers are checked for validity of domain names, before they are accepted for for delivery.

MailScan for SMTP Servers can control multiple domains.

MailScan provides Hop Control to ensure that the emails do not loop.

SMTP: Extended Turn feature is included in Mailscan for SMTP Servers. ETRN is an extension to the SMTP mail delivery protocol that allows an SMTP server to request from another SMTP server any email messages it has for a specific domain. ETRN typically is used to retrieve email messages from a mail server that does not have a dedicated connection to the Internet. ETRN can only be used in conjunction with an ISP that supports ETRN. This feature is available only for MailScan for SMTP Servers.

The POP3 Downloader
The Enterprise Edition of MailScan for SMTP Servers can act like a SMTP/POP3 email gateway to allow users to download messages from their Internet POP3 mailboxes, to their local email folders.

For example, although majority of the SMTP servers (such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes) have an Internet mail service, they do not have the ability to retrieve messages from the Internet mailboxes residing at your ISP.

The Enterprise Edition of MailScan for SMTP Servers uses the POP3 protocol, the accepted standard for retrieving messages from Internet mailboxes, so the POP3 Downloader can download mails from multiple POP3 accounts and forward them to the SMTP Server for delivery.

Wildcard Account download is supported (where a single account collects mails for the entire domain). After download, recipients' addresses are checked for the domain, the emails sorted and sent to them.

The administrator can schedule the downloading of emails at regular intervals without any user intervention.The administrator can also set size restriction on emails that are downloaded. Duplicate mails are checked and are not downloaded. These are deleted in the server itself. The smallest message is downloaded first and largest later.
