Interactive Voting Systems

The buzz at the British Education and Training Technology (BETT) show 2006 (the technology event for education) was all about interactive voting systems.

So what is this next big thing to hit the education and corporate sectors?

For those not familiar with the technology, think of the little handsets the audience use on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire when the contestant chooses the Ask the audience option. Or for those old enough, cast your minds back to the voting systems used on the 1980's talent show New Faces when Marti Caine told the audience Press your buttons now to vote for the winner.

Obviously, interactive voting systems have moved on considerably since the days of New Faces, but the technology is based on the same idea.

An Interactive Voting System enables each person in a room to respond to questions using a personal handheld remote control. All the responses are sent to a computer and recorded instantly.

The name interactive voting system is actually a misnomer as you can use it for much more than voting. It is more an audience response system. Such systems have a multitude of business as well as educational applications.

The handsets on the market today just require a computer to work with them. They can be used with an interactive whiteboard, but results and data can be just as easily projected onto a blank wall or a dry whiteboard.

A British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) representative said: ?We have schools involved in our test bed that are making use of voting buttons. When used for a real purpose, not just a gimmick, voting buttons add an exciting extra dimension to learning and teaching.?

Although education is emerging as the main market for interactive voting systems, many feel that the technology will eventually take off in the corporate space.

The way the data can be collected means it can be used for opinion gathering, which makes it appropriate for a lot of businesses.
